Easy Apple Crumble Recipe

Though it is a very popular dessert, I had homemade apple crumble first time at a friend Neera Khanna's place. She had made it soooo nicely. Texture, aroma, presentation....everything was out of the world. I couldn't resist myself and yes you are right, I asked her for the recipe and since then it is a regular in my house too. I have made it umpteen times. Every time it has won hearts and brought me applauds. Thanks so much, Neera.

Though it can be had any time of the year but in winters it is just apt.... as it is hot and has cinnamon too.

FAQs

Q) What is the difference between Crumble, Crisps and Pie?

  • Crumble and Crisps have a similar filling but the flour used is different. Crisps are supposed to contain oats whereas Crumbles are without oats.
  • And Pie? Well, a pie has 2 crusts, on the bottom as well on the top.

Q) How a Cobbler is different from a Crumble?

  • In Cobblers, fresh fruits are covered with thick dollops of cake batter or cookie dough, which once baked gives the appearance of a cobbled road and hence are called Cobblers. Check Cherry Cobbler recipe.
  • Whereas, when the same fruits are covered with a streusel-like topping they are called Crumble or Crisps.

Q) What is meant by streusel?

Streusel is nothing but a mix of flour and sugar wherein butter has been rubbed and thus looks crumbly like coarse sand.

Q) Can I make ahead this pudding?

It takes just 35 to 40 minutes in the oven. So, assemble everything and keep it in the refrigerator, for up to 3 to 4 hours. Then, near the time of serving, simply take it out of the refrigerator and keep it in the oven. This is because nothing to beat the taste and flavour of sizzling hot crumble.

Q) What about any leftover pudding?

Transfer it to an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator. At the time of serving, simply reheat it and serve.

Q) Is it necessary to preheat the oven?

No! Preheating is not necessary as no leavening agents are used in this recipe. However, still preheating is recommended just to cut down the baking time.

Q) The recipe says 4 apples. But apples come in varied sizes. So how much apples are to be used actually?

  • You are right about the varied sizes of apples. Here, i am talking of medium-sized apples. However, take apples of any size, but after peeling and slicing, they should roughly be 3 to 4 cups.
  • Also, you can adjust the quantity of apples as per the size of your baking dish

Q) Can I skip all-purpose flour and make the streusel only with whole wheat flour?

Yes, you can!

Q) What other fruit can be used in place of apples?

Use pears or peaches in place of apples.
